“Words are Things”: Byron’s Fugitive Pieces

Conspicuously little critical attention has been devoted to Byron’s earliest publication, less even his first collection, Fugitive Pieces (1806), a book of poems—‘trifles’, as he calls them—written in teenage years and meant only be circulated privately among friends. Even for those critics who do not dismiss simply puerile, the consensus that ‘it did yet embody final thoughts’ (Cochran) leads conclusion books are unmistakeably personal works (McGann), is say, express mental interiority its infancy.
